Council of
Shipwrights
Representation: Firms
Overview
The Mon
Calamari do not function in a way that their shipwrights and shipbuilding firms
can function in the same way as those of the rest of the galaxy. To the Mon
Calamari, building their ships is a supreme expression of art. There is no
megacorp here, no massive nationalized business, no profit motive aside from a
means of subsistence. Therefore, the shipwrights of Calamari are not actually a
single entity, but numerous, tiny firms, each with a small production team and a
labor pool functioning at a single (or several) stardock(s). These firms have
united to form the Mon Calamari Council of Shipwrights by unanimous
decision.
These production teams never have an actual chief of production or head designer. Rather, each individual firm contracts out to Mon Calamari artists, who design each ship as a unique work of art. The drive to obtain the most skilled artists and produce the most moving starships keeps these firms competitive, and nobody then worries much about the profit motive.
Firm Specifics
To
date, there are over 200 Mon Calamari shipwright firms with membership in the
Council. Some of these firms have become quite large, thanks to their solid
reputations and beautiful products. Others rent stardock complexes from the
larger firms for single projects. The most celebrated shipwright firms
include:
Alik Designs: Specializing in smaller vessels, Alik maintains four stardocks, each with a strong reputation.
Cepic Group: A noteworthy firm, Cepic is composed primarily of vanguard artists that rent stardocks and construction crews for individual projects. They count such impressive works as MC80 Resplendant and MC100a Oceanfoam among their recent accomplishments.
Deruth Shipwrights, Ltd.: One of the larger firms, Deruth continuously uses fourteen stardocks and is one of the larger producers of the mighty Super Star Cruiser. Deruth is unique in that it maintains four "Project Directors," who are personally responsible for the location of design talent and for overseeing artistic expectations during construction throughout each individual project.
Kheshif Cruiser: Another large firm, Keshif operates from six stardocks and produces only the MC80 Luxury Liner. With one of the longest and most distinguished traditions throughout the Council, Kheshif is continually contracted for work with the private sector.
Mervili Design Corporation: Mervili is the largest of the Council's firms. Although they maintain only twelve stardocks, thereby smaller than Deruth and seven other major shipwrights, they employ far more Mon Calamari and Quarren, and have the highest starship output of any organization within the Council. A favorite contractor of RCP, Mervili also maintains above-average private sector sales. However, their "mass production" method has its drawbacks as well; Mervili starships cannot command the price that Cepic and Sirfol can and regularly do.
Republic-Calamari Partnership: A new and somewhat unique firm, RCP functions to communicate orders between the New Republic and the shipwrights. With a staff of only four, it is the smallest of the many firms with membership in the Council.
Sirfol Shipwrights: Although one of the smaller firms, with interests in only a single stardock and a lax production schedule, Sirfol nevertheless has a reputation as one of the greatest sources of masterpieces throughout the Council. Of course, rates for Sirfol ships tend to be at the upper edge of the average price range.
Uknish Stardrive: Uknish recently became the most stardock-heavy firm within the Council, with the purchase of its seventeenth dock from a failing firm. Surprisingly, Uknish ranks well outside of the highest selling firms. Many of the top artists refuse to work with Uknish, declaring their abnormal size to create a mark of mediocrity among their works.
