There always seems to be something new for this mapping stuff. I swear WEG had their own, unpublished map that they were going by when their writers put together some of these books. Some things seem to fit together too well.
'Galactic Skeleton'
After doing a faint, smallish circle, which shows where the Mid-Rim ends and the Outer Rim Territories begin, these processes and important and semi-important trade routes make up the start of any map I sketch idly in class:
Coruscant is near the very center of the circle, at an angle of maybe 1:15 to 1:30.
The Perlemian Trade Route, which wiggles a little bit to the right from Coruscant and generally upwards, to just before the circle
The Corellian Run Trade Route starts at Coruscant as well and goes to the right a bit before turning upwards approximately towards 1:45, also ending before reaching the circle.
The Rimma Trade Route shoots outwards towards 10:30 to 11:00 from an arbitrary point at approximately 10:30 relative to the center of the galaxy and at about the edge of the Core Worlds. After reaching the edge of the circle, the route has a curve in the Outer Rim Territories, where it covers twice the distance it took getting to the edge of the circle.
The Hydian Way Trade Route is an approximately straight line. It crosses the Perlemian (at Brentaal) and Corellian Run (previously at Corellia, but that world might be too close to Coruscant for this) routes close to Coruscant (definately within the Core Worlds) and the Rimma Run (at Eriadu) a little very ways outside of the circle. After this, it can be curved a little depending on where you want it, and is extended outwards past the Rimma to a little less than twice its length from Brentaal to Eriadu. In the other direction, it probably only goes a little ways.
The Duros Space Run is drawn starting at a point on the Rimma Run half-way between Eriadu and the light circle. It curves up briefly to be parallel with the Rimma Run, then out again (to perpendicular with the Rimma Run), where a point is drawn for Sluis Van. Then it curves back up again and back out again in smaller arcs. After this, it just extends out into the vast reaches of the Outer Rim Territories.
The Salin Corridor is a circle around the outside of the faint circle drawn at the beginning, with a dip into and back out of the Mid-Rim (across the faint circle) near Hutt Space somewhere between the Rimma Run and Perlemian. The only description is that it goes 'around' the Outer Rim Territories. This gives two options, a smaller circle or a larger one. The smaller circle would cross the Rimma Run at Sullust and cause only short additional trade routes beyond the ends of the Perlemian and Corellian Run to reach the Salin Corridor. The larger circle hits the Duros Space Run a ways beyond Sluis Van and provides the location for Duro, which is supposed to be a trade world. It also crosses the Hydian Way and Rimma Run farther apart, making whatever worlds receive those points more strategic because they would stand alone. And routes extending out into the Rim from the Perlemian and Corellian Run would receive more prominence. I almost always go for the larger circle for the Salin Corridor.
Rimma Trade Route extensions
The Trition Trade Route is first extension off of the Rimma Run, at its Rimward end. A short, twisting line is drawn from that point (Pergitor) still further out into the Rim, which goes to Kathol Sector.
The Coyn Route extends clockwise off of the Rimma Run a short distance, starting at a point (Tantra) 3/4ths of its Outer Rim length. After this, another short line is drawn up and down, with the end of the Coyn Route at its center. This is the Elrood-Derilyn Trade Route. The top endpoint is Derilyn, which can have an older route drawn from it to the Rimma Run. The middle is Coyn. And the bottom endpoint is Elrood. These three are the primary worlds of Elrood Sector.
The Lipsec Run goes through Eriadu almost perpendicular to both the Hydian Way and Rimma Run trade routes. Making it cross the Duros Space Run at Sluis Van seems too contrived and arbitrary, but it is possible. How far it extends in either direction after that question is resolved is arbitrary, based on whether you want another prong out into the Outer Rim Territories counterclockwise from the Duros Space Run and whether you want activity Rimward of Hutt Space. This area might get its own routes later as things get resolved.
The Yankirk Route is a little wavy line I always draw clockwise from Eriadu, between the Lispec Run and Hydian Way. It doesn't go anywhere (yet), and is just a local trade route that might not even make it out of Seswenna Sector.
Near the Coreward end of the Rimma Run, towards the outer edge of the Colonies, a ">" with an even wider angle than that is made on the clockwise side of the trade route. This is the true course of the Rimma Run. The piece that's left over from being drawn earlier is really the Shapani Bypass. At the middle of the Shapani Bypass (Tallaan, in Tapani Sector), draw a line clockwise, for the Giju Passage. Have it cross the Rimma Run at about the center of the ">" (Giju, in Herglic Space) and extend it all the way to the Hydian Way, keeping it within the Colonies region. It ends there, and sometimes I've called that point Kelada, but that isn't set yet.
These routes are covered by the Tapani Sector map and don't assocate with any trade route outside the sector: Calipsa Run, Caloria Run, Cor Lane, Leozi Run, Procopian Shipping Lane, and the Three Ellas Run.
With that, the basic template has been reached. I don't any order established yet for how I like to do things beyond this point. There are two main areas that come to mind, though, that need to be resolved:
- Hutt Space is approximately in the middle (and in the inner portion of the Mid-Rim) of the area between the Hydian Way and Perlemian trade routes. Additional routes curve around each side of it, and some probably go right in. Their locations need resolution.
- The location of Celanon between the Perlemian and Corellian Run trade routes and the routes extending from each toward and away from it.
Part of #2 (a Perlemian extension away from Celanon) can be resolved using #1.
Hutt Space
The Leisure Corridor extends from Coruscant upwards towards the dip in the Salin Corridor. It should be a little counterclockwise of 12:00. It ends at Ebiwaan in the Inner Rim Planets.
Clockwise of Hutt Space:
At some point in the Inner Rim along the Leisure Corridor, the Harrin Trade Corridor juts out from its clockwise side at Harrin, then forms an arc that sends it back into a counterclockwise end at Merren in the Mid-Rim.
The Enarc Run begins at Vondarc in the Mid-Rim, which may be considered to be on the Perlemian Trade Route. It juts across the Mid-Rim a little ways, then curves upwards as a sort of clockwise counterpart to the Harrin Trade Route. They come very close to each other. At one point, draw a tiny little line between the two, which is the Kira Run. The Enarc Run continues upwards, and as Enarc (its endpoint) is considerd a jump-off point into the Outer Rim, it may be continued up to the point where the Salin Corridor's dip into the Mid-Rim ends. Worlds along the Kira area of the Harrin and Enarc routes are on WEG's map.
Counterclockwise of Hutt Space:
The Llanic Spice Run leaves the Leisure Corridor on its counterclockwise side at some point, maybe even its end at Ebiwaan. From there, it curves gradually upwards, though a section of space stuffed with sectors and worlds mentioned in GG9 and GG11. Just leave it's other end hanging for the moment without having it cross any of the other trade routes.
The Triellus Trade Route was worth a mention on the Secrets of the Sisar Run map. It crosses the Salin Corridor counterclockwise of the dip into the Mid-Rim, but how long it is after that intersection is determined is arbitrary. I have it connecting to the Hydian Way for one end and the other end shooting out into the reaches of the Galaxy, which can be filled in as more of Area 3 later. The Llanic Spice Run can be made to terminate on this route.
This leaves the Vaathkree Trade Corridor as the last definately known route in the area for the moment. It is required to go as far Coreward as the Inner Rim Planets, but the Vaathkree homeworld is Rimward of Hutt Space (inner edge of Mid-Rim) without that route being labeled on the Secrets of the Sisar Run map. The Vaathkree could go out to Iotra and then be drawn downwards on the map, or it could go to Solacton and then Lant and then be the trade route servicing the core of Hutt Space. After that, it can continue downwards to the Inner Rim Planets and maybe termanate on the Hydian Way. The point where it crosses the Llanic Spice Run could be within the Hook Nebula, which is supposed to be a strategic sector.
