Garlus Tylappar has a problem.
He's number one on a mobster's hit list.
This crusty old skipper has lost his crew,
his freighter has a hole in it, and he's dying.
But his troubles have only begun....

Episode I: A Strange Cargo

Nearly a month ago, Garlus carried a routine shipment of mid-tech cargo from Kashyyk to Starlyte Station, which orbits Tshindral III on the Mid- and Outer Rim border. The station is home to a large assortment of scum with business ties to the Hutts.

When Garlus was unloading the crates, the last one burst open, revealing the frightened eyes of four Tachs. The Tach is a small monkey-like creature native to Kashyyyk. They are a protected species and illegal to hunt or export.

What the Hutts and Talandro Starlyte wanted with the Tachs, Garlus couldn't imagine. No one would think of eating them. And although they were very bright animals, they were hardly efficient for slave labor. He found out that the animal were being butchered to harvest certain glands as a major narcotic component to a drink called Tarisian ale. Tach hunting had been made illegal on Kashyyyk thousands of years ago due to the wanton slaughter of the animals and the unhealthy narcotic effects of the ale. Garlus became outraged and would not be part of it.

His conscience was playing a greater role in his life at that time, because he knew he had little time left. Garlus was dying of Brekkin Vinthern disease.   He had ignored the disease for too long -- holes in the memory being one of its effects -- and could not be cured. At Starlyte Station, he decided that he would not spend his last days aiding the criminals. He would reveal the horrid crime at hand.

He tucked the four Tachs into a trap door in the ceiling of his quarters -- only opening it to feed them -- and hid manifests and datatapes of his findings in a secret panel behind the ship's main life support machinery. Then he tried to pretend all was normal. He was beginning to load a return shipment, when Starlyte's people (or the Hutts) discovered that four Tachs were missing. The glands must have been pretty valuable for them to notice that four animals were missing.

A hit squad converged on the Gullwind. Garlus and his crew barely escaped. They fled to Rodia, then down the Corellian Run to Corellia and over to the Rimma Trade Route. A string of bounty hunters dogged every move they made. At the Yag'dhul system practically on the other side of the galaxy from his starting point, Garlus' luck ran out. The Hutt's pirate thugs murdered his loyal crew. Garlus got away with his ship, but not before the enemy ships put a hole in it. He limped down the Rimma Run to the Revok system, where he is presently parked in orbit near Skar'Lok Stations.

Garlus is a clever man, and he could devise a plan to shake the thugs, if only he would forget about the criminals he used to work for. But he is determined to take the Tachs back to Kashyyyk, even if it's the last thing he ever does.

To fulfill this last wish, Garlus must find a new crew at Skar'Lok Stations -- fast. Even if he must lie to persuade them to join him. The new crew has much to look forward to. They'll have the chance to inherit the Gullwind but they'll also have the chance to die at the hands of a detestable crime lord.
